TAMPA, Fla. – Pinky rings, silk shirts and good vibes were on full display at the packed Ice Palace (Amalie Arena) on Thursday night. Even before the crown embroidered curtain lifted and pop superstar Bruno Mars took to the stage, funk was very much alive in Tampa.
The 32-year-old chart-topping artist has had a busy year, selling over 170 million singles and 26 million albums worldwide. Mars’s seemingly-endless 24K Magic World Tour danced into Tampa, and delighted fans with a tenacious and lively performance of both present and past hits.
The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, was joined on stage by his Nike-clad eight-piece ensemble of “Hooligans,” whose combined showmanship nearly matched Mars’s own.
The nearly two hour performance showcased the best of Mars. He sang, danced and even delighted fans with an carefully orchestrated interlude voicemail skit midway through his crooning of “Calling On My Lovelies.”
“Hey baby. It’s Bruno. I’m in Tampa. Remember when you said you wanted to vacation in Jamaica and the Bahamas,” he questioned on the voicemail to a fabricated ex-love (probably Hallee Berry), grinning slightly. “And I said… Fuck that, we going to Tampa!”
The crowd erupted for a moment and then were quickly swept back into the bombastic wave of Mars’s seemingly endless rolodex of hit singles.
In August, Mars refuted echoes from fans crowning him the new king of pop. However, when the familiar crown embroidered curtain dropped and the lights came on at the close of his Thursday night show, many might argue for Mars’s pop royalty status.
